Houston / Bellaire, Texas (PRWEB) October 11, 2005 -- Bellaire attorney Nan Wagoner met real-life heroes after whom televisions popular CSI series seems modeled during her second class at Houstons FBI Citizens Academy. Im convinced that the television show should be called ERT - - not CSI, Wagoner said.
Wagoner, managing counsel for the southwest Houston law firm of Wagoner Burgert LLP, is pictured with Special Agent Deborah Gannaway who coordinates the FBIs Evidence Response Teams (ERT) at the Agencys Houston headquarters.
The FBI Citizens Academy is a six-week program that gives business professionals and community leaders an inside look at information not otherwise made available to the general public about how the federal agency operates. Held once annually, participation is by invitation only and limited to a total of 25 community leaders with a record of volunteerism, civic activism, and interest in public safety.
We were amazed to learn whats involved on the front lines in real ERT work, Wagoner said. These people actually recovered the space shuttle remains and processed the Jasper hate-crime murder scene, she continued. Theyre the exception to the rule that what you see on television is more dramatic than real life.
Citizens Academy training entails three-four hours of class each week, as well as a full days instruction at the FBI firing-range, and alumni from previous graduating classes also host weekly dinner receptions for the current years participants. The 2005 class began on September 29th with an overview of agency operations and will conclude with a graduation dinner and ceremony on November 17th.
Houstons FBI headquarters implemented the national Citizens Academy program in the fall of 2000 to dispel its historically secretive, aloof image and build relationships between the agency and leaders in the communities served by the regional FBI office. Special Agents brief participants weekly on the agencys investigative and enforcement programs, including counterterrorism, violent crime, organized crime, drugs, and white collar crime.
Probably the most surprising thing so far has been to see how different this group is from the territorial J. Edgar Hoover image we grew up with, Wagoner said. Coordinating intelligence information with other enforcement branches really seems to be a priority - - theres even a CIA agent in our Academy class!
Wagoner, who coordinated Bellaire Southwest Rotarys disaster-relief efforts following Katrina, sits on the BSWH Rotary Board, chaired that groups August Gulfton Immunization Initiative, and was named Rotarian of the Year by the club in June. Wagoner Burgert LLP is located at 5202 Spruce Street in Bellaire, Texas.
