WASHINGTON, D.C., March 3, 2005 – Hogan & Hartson L.L.P. announced today that leading aviation lawyer Robert Cohn has joined as a partner in the Washington office. Cohn, whose practice emphasis has been on aviation law for more than 30 years, is widely recognized in the field of aviation practitioners. He has served as principal outside regulatory counsel to several of the country’s major airlines, as well as counsel to several successful start-up air carriers.

Cohn represents a diverse group of clients, including air carriers, airports, trade associations, and service providers. He has practiced before the U.S. Departments of Transportation (DOT), State and Justice, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the federal courts, and international tribunals.

"Bob has an extensive practice that involves every facet of domestic and international aviation law and that blends exceptionally well with our own client base," said George Carneal, director of the firm's aviation practice. "The knowledge and experience he has gained over many years representing clients before DOT and FAA with great distinction will be an invaluable asset for our aviation practice. We are extremely pleased to have Bob join our firm."

Prior to entering private law practice, Cohn held senior legal and policy positions at the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) from 1970-1977, serving as Executive Assistant to three CAB Board members, including the chairman and vice chairperson of the CAB. Most recently, Cohn was the chairman of the aviation group of a major Washington law firm.

“This is a unique opportunity to combine two of the top aviation practices in the industry,” Cohn said. “I’ve known George Carneal and Ted Ellett at Hogan & Hartson for years, and I am excited to have them as colleagues in this dynamic area of practice.”

Cohn is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Fifth and Eleventh Circuits, and the Supreme Court. He received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and his bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University.

Cohn is joined by counsels Alexander 'Sascha' Van der Bellen and Sheryl Israel, both of whom have extensive aviation law experience.

Van der Bellen has more than a decade of experience handling complex aviation matters. He has experience in a wide range of aviation issues, and concentrates his practice before the DOT and FAA. Van der Bellen received his law degree, cum laude, from Tulane Law School and his bachelor's degree from Hamilton College.

Israel has represented clients on a broad array of DOT, FAA, and Transportation Security Administration regulatory matters. She received her law degree from Boston University School of Law and her bachelor's degree from Tulane University.
