One of the most regular brain injuries is a traumatic brain injury. It is an agression to the brain produced by an exterior force, which may cause a diminished or distorted condition of perception that produces a harm in the cognitive skills or corporal functioning. This harm can be temporary or permanent and it may also cause total or limited disability or emotional maladjustment. This kind of brain damage can be induced by shaking, like in the case of the Shaken Baby Syndrome, or by a direct blow or impact from a projectile, knife or another object that will force any hair, skin bone or fragments of the object into the brain.
Closed head damage occurs when someone receives a direct hit to the head from an external force. In this case, the cranium does not break or move, this situation is known as closed head injury. What happens is that someone receives the impact, then the brain swells but it does not have space to enlarge. This causes a pressure in the head that may make the brain to compress and cause the damage.
