Numerous state agencies have reported incidents of careless care of nursing home patients that have resulted in death for many of them. Many of these deaths were avoidable. The law says that nursing homes have to give all the necessary care required to keep the highest feasible physical, mental and psycho social well-being of each patient. The inability of some nursing homes to meet the terms and regulations has resulted in sicknesses and sometimes in deaths.
In 1987, the Nursing Home Reform Act was established, which requires these places to obtain federal financial support to provide each patient a better quality in their services and accommodations. In addition, residents of these homes have a right to a decorous life, self willpower and contact with and access to persons related to services inside and outside of the center.
Some of the regulations established in the act above mentioned are: nursing homes must have enough nursing and other equipment to offer medical services, this to provide the good being of each patient; the homes must be managed in a mode that enables them to utilize funds successfully and competently to keep the highest general well being of each resident; they have to develop comprehensive individualized care procedures for patients, this procedure has to be developed in 7 days after the achievement of the services that are going to be offered.
However, there have been several, actually many reports of abuse in the nursing homes. Patients suffer because they receive a bad service, the staff does not help them with their requirements, some have suffered violations and others unfortunately have died.
